SUCCESS STORY: Patient Philip Hetu

Philip Hetu

Mr. Hetu’s journey is a powerful example of resilience and recovery. Following a hospitalization in December 2025 for acute respiratory failure with hypoxia, intestinal ulcer, severe sepsis, and an acute embolism of the right upper extremity, he underwent 4 surgeries and required an induced coma for approximately one month. During this time, he developed significant wounds, including a pressure injury, which required ongoing management upon admission to rehab.

Upon regaining consciousness, he was unable to walk or perform basic self-care tasks, including feeding himself.

After making gradual progress at the hospital and a previous rehab facility, Mr. Hetu was admitted to Guardian Care on March 4, 2026, at an extensive assist level. Through consistent participation and determination, he made remarkable gains throughout his rehabilitation stay, including significant healing of his wounds, which are now 95% resolved.

By discharge, planned for April 29th, 2026, Mr. Hetu has progressed to a modified independent level. He is now able to ambulate independently with a cane over 200 feet, including navigating ramps and curbs outdoors, and is independent with activities of daily living.

Mr. Hetu met all established goals and is looking forward to returning home, where he will resume helping care for his elderly mother. He expressed deep gratitude to the Guardian Care team, sharing: “I saw so many miracles during my stay here. I’ve seen people walking out of here every single day”.

His story reflects not only his personal strength and perseverance, but also the impact of a dedicated rehabilitation team working together to support a complex and meaningful recovery.
